Spring Tree Care Guide: Northern Virginia

Spring is in the air—and your trees can feel it too. As temperatures rise and days grow longer, trees begin their seasonal comeback. Leaves unfurl, nutrients flow, and color returns to your landscape. Thanks to Northern Virginia’s favorable position on the USDA Hardiness Zone Map, we enjoy a wide variety of thriving tree species. Let’s take a look at how to best care for them this spring.

Assessing Winter Damage

Winter can be tough on trees, even in a temperate region like ours. One of the most common effects is winter burn, especially on evergreens. This happens when trees lose water through their needles or leaves faster than their roots can replace it from frozen ground.

Signs of winter burn:

  • Browning or discoloration of needles or leaves
  • Wilting or drooping branches
  • Severe damage that can lead to plant death

Early spring is a great time to visually inspect your yard. Here’s what to look for:

  • Broken or hanging limbs (especially those overhead)
  • Dead branches prone to falling
  • Signs of stress or decay at the trunk or base

If you’re unsure about what you see, don’t take risks. Schedule a consultation with a professional. Our team at AAA Tree Service can assess your property and help address any safety hazards or long-term health issues.

Springtime Pruning and Clean-Up

Different trees and shrubs respond differently to seasonal pruning. The general rule? Wait until flowering trees have bloomed before pruning, while dead or damaged limbs on most deciduous trees can be removed anytime.

Spring Pruning Guidelines by Tree Type:

  • Flowering trees and shrubs: Prune after blooming
  • Oaks, Maples, and other deciduous trees: Remove dead, damaged, or hanging limbs anytime
  • Elms: Avoid pruning in the summer—low water content limits recovery

Want to be sure you’re pruning correctly? Check out Virginia Cooperative Extension’s guide to pruning trees and shrubs for helpful seasonal tips.

This is also the ideal time for a full yard refresh:

  • Remove fallen limbs or winter debris
  • Clean flower beds
  • Inspect ornamental trees and shrubs

For any trimming or removal involving heights, always hire a qualified professional with proper insurance and experience. AAA Tree Service carries both liability and workers’ compensation insurance and has more than 40 years of experience serving the Northern Virginia area.

Whether you’re a homeowner or a commercial property owner, hiring the right team ensures your trees are handled safely and professionally.

The Right Way to Mulch in Spring

Mulching provides major benefits for your trees when done correctly. It helps:

  • Retain moisture
  • Regulate soil temperature
  • Suppress weeds
  • Enrich soil with nutrients as it breaks down

But there’s a catch—too much mulch is harmful.

Avoid the “Mulch Volcano.” Piling mulch high around the base of a tree (a mulch volcano) leads to girdling roots, which can slowly choke the tree and lead to long-term decline.

Tips For Proper Spring Mulching:

  • Use 2–4 inches of mulch
  • Keep mulch 2–3 inches away from the trunk
  • Create a flat, donut-shaped ring rather than a mound
